SCIENCE COLLEGE EVENTS AT S.C.G.S.G.
Since the school was awarded Science College status in September 2004, there have been a lot of changes and events at SCGSG to help meet the targets:
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS:
Several new sets of laptops in cabinets from Rock PLC to support independent learning
The creation of an Independent Learning Suite, fully equipped with multimedia resources and study material
The appointment of an Independent Learning Adviser
Increased provision of ICT and Interactive whiteboards
The appointment of an Advanced Skills Teacher in Science (Mrs Garvey)
Introduction of AS level Science for Public Understanding (SPU) as an option choice for Y12
Introduction of GCSE separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) for one pilot Y10 group and for all Y10 students from September 2006
The appointment of a community technician
Accelerated learning in Mathematics for KS3 (taking SAT exam in Y8)
The wider use of ICT to support learning (webtrails, concept maps and MP3 revision notes in Science)
EVENTS:
Talk to Y7 on comets and space exploration from Dr Tracey Poole (a former student now working as an astrophysicist at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory).
Visit to the Stardome mobile planetarium for all of Y7, Y10 separate science group and Y12 AS Physics group and some visiting Y5 and Y6 students.
Visit to the Biobubble for Y9 students and visiting Y6 students.
All of Y10 attended the 2006 Faraday Lecture ‘Emission Impossible’ at Symphony Hall
All of Y9 at SCGSG and College High School watched the Quantum Theatre group deliver a Physics revision cabaret on Forces!
Y10 and Y11 and invited parents watched a presentation on ‘Weird Waves’ from Science Made Simple
Y11 attended a revision lecture on GCSE Science at Coventry University.
Y7 students took part in a Mathematics problem solving day with the Happy Puzzle Company.
Y10 and Y11 GCSE PE option groups visited Cpoventry University for a Sports Science workshop.
The succseeful 2005 Gifted & Talented week of events on Science for KS3 students, including film making, Science & Sport, running a small business, competitions, making Slimy Snot and examing DNA.
All of Y9 took part in the 'Science Specatular' show, performing dance, poetry, music, drama and presentations for an invited audience of local primary students.
A visit by Zoolab to look at real creatures close up with Y7 and Y9.
A series of A level masterclasses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology for Y12 and Y13 students, presented by leading teachers and examiners
A 'Science of Art' Saturday workshop for students in KS4 and A level Art classes.
